TEAM PHILIPPINES SOARS IN VIETNAM


Almost a dozen medals won, team Philippines made a new mark in the 18th Vietnam Open International Athletics Tournament at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

After 18 years, Eliezer Sunang made a new record in shot put when he hurled the iron ball at a distance of 16.56 meters and defeated his Indonesian and Vietnamese opponents’ 15.02m and 13.55m record respectively.

A native of Tuba, Benguet, 26 year-old Sunang beat Fil-Am Bruce Ventura’s shot put record of 15.83m back in April 16, 1993 National Open. Sunang got three golds and two silvers for the Philippines.

Nino Espinosa placed second in long jump with a record of 7.42 meters. Long jumper Henry Dagmil who just recovered from a motorcycle accident leapt 7.58m that made a 1-2 finish and got the team another gold medal. Teammate javelin thrower Danilo Fresnido also bagged the gold in his event when he edged out his Vietnamese rival’s 66m versus his 67m throw.

Katherine Santos, long jumper from Baguio City added a silver medal in the collection by doing a 5.99m effort. Jayson Ramil Cid reached the finals of the 400m run and 400m hurdles while Josie Malacad reached the 400m hurdles in the women’s division.
